Darwin can across tiny spiders dangling from short strands of the web onto the HMS Beagle far from any land mass. He marveled at their aerial antics, a debate was underway as to how spiders became airborne in the first place. Scientists suggest that the act of “ballooning” might be orchestrated by the earth's natural electric field. The image shows a social spider (Stegodyphus sp.) ejecting a thin strand of the web which will help it to take off with the help of wind as well as the earth's electrostatic force.

Cannibalism or courtship?

For three days these two snakes ( a large male and smaller female) were spotted on campus involved in a combat/courtship. On the third day, they got too close to the institute and had to be rescued and release nearby. Before the rescue, I managed to get a few images and I am confused about whether this is courtship or cannibalism? The animals were released into the adjacent scrub.

Trapdoor spiders are one of the most fascinating spiders. Most species construct a burrow in the ground with one or more entries or exits. Members of the genus Sason that belong to the family of Brush-footed spiders make a shallow nest with a double door mostly on tree trunks and even on moss-covered rocks. In the three images here one can see the camouflage burrow in the first image and finally the spider in the three images. These spiders are common wherever they occur but poorly documented.

The Strong trapdoor tarantula (Haploclastus validus) constructs a trapdoor burrow, unlike most tarantulas. The male and female look strikingly different to a point that the scientist who described the species, ended up describing the male and female as separate species!
